Rhino 5: Error "Rhino is Unable to Connect to ZooClient.dll"

Problem

Rhino 5 shows the message “Rhino is unable to connect to ZooClient.dll. Rhino will not run.” In known cases, this happens only with Rhino 5 64-bit on Windows 8. Rhino 5 32-bit is not affected.

Cause

Rhino 5 doesn’t have the permissions it needs to interact with ZooClient.dll.

Solution 1

Download and install the Rhino 5 full version. It includes an updated installer and the current service release, which the original DVD release of Rhino 5 did not.

Solution 2

  1. Right-click the Rhino 5 shortcut on the desktop and select Properties. The changes apply to the Rhino 5 executable, not just the shortcut.
  2. On the Compatibility tab, select Windows 7 compatibility mode.
  3. Check Run this program as an administrator.
  4. Click OK.
