Why is there no MSI installer for Rhino?

  1. Install Rhino for Mac on one computer, and license it to use your LAN Zoo server.
  2. Rhino creates the license file
    • Rhino 9:
      Folder: /Users/Shared/McNeel/Rhinoceros/9.0/License Manager/Licenses/
      File: 9fd57e3c-6a27-4151-a408-e9c7487cbfc4.lic
    • Rhino 8:
      Folder: /Users/Shared/McNeel/Rhinoceros/8.0/License Manager/Licenses/
      File: 868c63f5-3760-4a45-8600-5399cc57b47c.lic
    • Rhino 7:
      Folder: /Users/Shared/McNeel/Rhinoceros/7.0/License Manager/Licenses/
      File: 59ff75c9-9c71-4ef8-a290-6b590f3fc63a.lic
  3. Copy the whole license folder to the same location on the target computers.
  4. Set the file and folder permissions to match (chmod 644).
  5. Deploy Rhino to the target computers.

Notes:

  • The License Manager folder also contains LicensesZooClient.Settings.xml, which holds the host name or IP address of your LAN Zoo server. Copying the whole folder deploys both. See How Does Rhino for Mac Find a LAN Zoo Server?
  • LAN Zoo and Cloud Zoo license files are plain text and can be copied from one computer to another. Single-computer license files are encrypted and unique to each computer, so they can’t be deployed this way.

Testing a Scripted Install for Windows

Prepare for the Install

  • If Rhino is already installed, uninstall it.
  • Delete old license (.lic) files:
    • LAN Zoo: C:\ProgramData\McNeel\Rhinoceros\6.0\License Manager\Licenses
    • Cloud Zoo: C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\McNeel\Rhinoceros\6.0\License Manager\Licenses, where <user> is the current user name.
  • For easy updates, use your LAN Zoo server’s fully qualified domain name (FQDN) rather than its IP address.

Run the Test

  1. Open the Windows Terminal app as Administrator. The scripted install requires administrator rights.

  2. CD to the folder where the installer is located.

  3. Run the scripted install. Below is an example LAN Zoo installation:
    rhino_en-us_9.#.#####.#####.exe -package -norestart LICENSE_METHOD=ZOO ZOO_SERVER=your_zoo_server.your_domain.com

  4. Uninstall Rhino after every test run. While troubleshooting, consider leaving out -passive so you can see any messages from the installer (for example, “Rhino is already installed”).

Notes
  • In a manual install, the license (.lic) file is created the first time Rhino runs.
  • In a scripted install, the license file is created during installation, and Rhino starts without asking you to configure licensing.
  • For a LAN Zoo, the license file is written to C:\ProgramData\McNeel\Rhinoceros\6.0\License Manager\Licenses.

Uninstalling Rhino for Windows

  1. Download the BurnOut.exe utility.
  2. Run BurnOut.exe with the ID for your version of Rhino:
    • Rhino 9: BurnOut.exe /uninstall {9FD57E3C-6A27-4151-A408-E9C7487CBFC4}
    • Rhino 8: BurnOut.exe /uninstall {851D74A0-D029-4AC7-9CBE-E50455C24237}
    • Rhino 7: BurnOut.exe /uninstall {F7D93B42-988E-462F-8D0B-4CFE68701F6D}
    • Rhino 6: BurnOut.exe /uninstall {730997CF-7DB0-427E-A829-16BCCBCF569D}

BurnOut finds and uninstalls every installation of that version of Rhino on the computer. It doesn’t remove per-user files created during or after installation.
