Rhinoceros 7 update

February 2021

Rhino 7 WIP Users,

Thank you again for all your support and passionate feedback during the Rhino 7 development. It has been three months since Rhino 7 started shipping and I wanted to remind you of a few things and update you on our development progress.

Reminders

  • The upgrade promotion ends soon. Details below.
  • Are you using a Rhino 7 eval? It will likely expire shortly after the promotion ends. You may want to purchase an upgrade before it is too late.
  • Do you still need Rhino 5 or 6?  Upgrading does not disable your Rhino 5 or 6 licenses. Of course, you can still use your Rhino 5 or 6, but you will still only own one license.
  • Do you need more Rhino 5 or 6 licenses? You can buy Rhino 7 and retrieve a legacy key using a new Rhino 7 key. Details here…
  • If you are using the LAN Zoo, you will need to upgrade to LAN Zoo 7 or move to the Cloud Zoo.
  • If you have an educational license and are no longer a student, you can buy a commercial upgrade. No need to buy a full commercial version.
  • If you are still a student, a special educational upgrade price is available.

Development happenings

  • For the foreseeable future, there will be a new Rhino 7 service release monthly with minor enhancements and bug fixes that should not wait for Rhino 8.
  • There are ongoing Rhino 7 related projects with new builds available every few weeks. Examples include:
    • Rhino.Inside Revit currently in Beta. We expect to release the first version in the next couple of months.
    • Enhanced support for Adobe's Substance texture development tools. Coming soon.
  • The Rhino 8 WIP is available to Rhino 7 users now. But, please don’t expect anything interesting in the early WIP releases while we are doing the core cleanup that was too dangerous to do late in the Rhino 7 development cycle.
    • We are tracking more than 3,000 requested features and enhancements.  As soon as we have the list sorted out and prioritized, we will be looking for your feedback.
    • Hopefully, Grasshopper 2 will be available in a Rhino 8 WIP. No promises when.
    • We are reorganizing the Rhino 8 core so that we can support Windows with OpenGL, macOS on Intel with OpenGL, macOS on Intel with Metal, and macOS on Apple Silicon with Metal. Our goal is to release them all at the same time from the same source code.
  • Apple is a special adventure right now.
    • Apple is moving away from supporting OpenGL and replacing it with their own Metal display technology. We expect to support Metal in a future Rhino 8 WIP, but not soon.
    • Apple is also moving away from the Intel processors and replacing them with their own Apple Silicon (M1) chips. Supporting these new chips is a two-step process.
      1. Ensuring that Rhino for macOS runs nicely on the M1 Macs using Apple's Rosetta 2 emulation technology.
      2. Compiling Rhino as a native Apple Silicon application.

Commercial Upgrade Promotion - Save 33%

  • The commercial upgrade promotion ends on 10-Mar-2021.
  • Any older version of Rhino can be upgraded without a price penalty for waiting.
  • Rhino evaluation versions are NOT upgradable.

Buy before 10-Mar-2021

Enjoy,

 - Bob McNeel
