Patch

Patch

Create untrimmed and 5+ sided surfaces that reach up to curvature continuity to neighboring surfaces in a few clicks.

A true workflow accelerator

We’ve all been there: The deadline is nearing, but just that pesky gap keeps you from sending out the part to your client.

Patch solves complex surfacing problems quickly. Create untrimmed and multi-sided surfaces that reach up to curvature continuity to neighboring surfaces. Fit surfaces through pointclouds and meshed with ease. Goodbye late night office hours. Welcome Patch!

A Dynamic Multi-Tool

With its dynamic user-interface, you can access the dialog at all times by double-clicking the Patch surface. Modify the input geometry, the settings and even select different continuities per edge! Keep the Patch dialog open while you add or modify other geometry.

Main Advantages

  • Input geometry: feed it edges, curves, points, meshes, or point clouds.
  • Complex transitions: create patches with 5 or more edges.
  • G0 to G2: apply different continuities per edge.
  • Modify Patch: edit your Patch at all times. Double-click the surface to open the dialog.
  • Live updates: It supports history. Modify input geometry to see the changes apply.
  • Live deviation analysis: Works in tandem with GlobalEdgeContinuity for accurate on the fly analysis.

5-Sided

Rhino uses industry-standard NURBS surfaces, which are four-sided by nature. Complex designs often require five or more sides, making surfaces harder to control. Meet Patch : Rhino’s freeform tool for creating complex multi-sided, continuity-matched surface transitions with ease.

4-Sided

Create untrimmed surfaces using Patch . Reach up to curvature continuity on all 4 sides while keeping the connection to neighbouring surfaces alive. Simply doubel-click the surface to modify the settings at all times.

Try It

  1. Download Rhino 9 WIP for Windows or Mac.
  2. Download and open the hairdryer.3dm model.
  3. Run the OneLayerOn command and select layer base-surfaces.
  4. Change your working viewport’s display mode to Shaded .
  5. Run the Patch command.
  6. Click on the edges that surround the hole you want to fill. Each edge will be marked with a G1 dot, indicating tangency continuity is set for this edge.
  7. Click once on the top dot. It will be changed to a G2 dot. Patch will then try to make the surface curvature continuous at this edge.
  8. Press . The Patch dialog will show up.
  9. Check preview to enable the (pink) preview. Notice the Constraints test results in the bottom of the dialog turn red.
  10. Check refine to let Patch refine the surface. Notice the Constraints test results turn green.
  11. Press to create the Patch.
  12. Try this on your own surfaces. Please ask questions and give feedback on the Discourse Forum.
