Relays are primarily organisational objects which allow for the rerouting of wires to remove visually awkward bundles, also known as spaghetti.
In addition to rerouting wires, relays may also be used to label wires. Any relay with an assigned name simply displays that name, however a relay without a name inherits its label from all source relays. The first example file shows this behaviour.
Finally relays do offer some non-cosmetic functionality as well. When frozen, either by double clicking or via the pop-up, a relay will no longer expire any downstream objects but will instead repeat the last data from before the freezing. This frozen data persists throughout the file saving/opening cycle. The second example file contains a single frozen relay, which prevents any changes made to the slider from percolating downstream.
