Gaussian
'ɡaʊsɪən

A type of colour interpolation used in colour gradients. The colour of any given gradient location is a combination of all grip colours, weighted by the distance to each grip. The closer the grip, the more effect its colour has. This effect diminishes as the distance from the grip increases, following the Gaussian bell curve. The weight of a grip at distance d is w=e−(dr)2.

Unlike all other interpolations, Gaussian does not guarantee that the colour of the gradient at a specific grip is indeed the colour of that grip. The colour grips are treated as suggestions rather than constraints.

The benefit of a Gaussian gradient is that it is the only interpolation which is always continuous under grip location changes. That is, a small change to the position of one grip always yields a small change to the total gradient, even if the small change affects the sort order of the grips.
