Alpha
ˈalfə
An aspect of a digital colour denoting the colour's transparency. Technically this is a property of a material rather than that of a colour, but in computers alpha is often combined with the colour as that simplifies workflows. Hence the term alpha is preferred to transparency as it no longer represents a physical property. Note that low alpha values encode very faint, transparent colours, while high values encode opaque colours.
