Solidscape’s approach to prototyping is quite unique relative to other products and technologies. Models from other systems are typically limited to concept/visualization or functional models. Solidscape’s proprietary, patented systems produce tooling grade master patterns for rubber tool making and direct investment casting. “Solidscape’s charter is to aid in shortening our customer’s time-to-market. By providing tooling grade master patterns, our customer’s short run cycles can be met, while eliminating delays caused by tooling redesign.” 3-D CAD designs from Rhino are imported into Solidscape’s ModelWorks software for orientation and build configuration selection. Configuration selection provides a user defined layer thickness from 0.0005 to 0.0030. Solidscape’s achievable accuracy is ± 0.0010 inches-per-inch across the X, Y and Z dimensions and features can be as small as 0.010 inches. Solidscape’s technology is called Drop-On-Demand Jetting. The delivery system consists of two piezo electric jets that put out up to 12,000 droplets per second. One jet delivers the build material (a proprietary type of styrene) while the other jet delivers the sacrificial support material (a wax for the support of undercuts and overhanging features). Both materials are solid at room temperature, but are kept molten within tanks located at the rear of the system. Upon completion of a pattern fabrication, the sacrificial support material is dissolved by immersing the pattern in a heated solution. Because the support material is dissolved, very small, intricate or hidden features are possible. With a surface finish of 32 to 63 micro-inches (RMS), patterns require little or no additional post-processing. Patterns created on the Solidscape systems are highly suitable for rubber mold making or investment casting. In investment casting, the pattern material has negligible expansion, fast autoclave meltout and leaves no ash or residue. Depending upon the type of rubber mold created from the master pattern, one could either make urethane plastic parts or could produce a vacuum cast, powdered metal tool.
